From this we have been able to learn that our posters have been successful at been able to grab the eye as well as making the viewer want to know more about the film. We also learned that our magazine does appeal to a younger and maybe more mainstream audience. With the film we can see that it has ended up fitting much more into the thriller/crime genre then the original plan of it been a horror film, we had realized this during production and aimed it more at a thriller audience.

When creating all 3 of our products it was important that we created a brand identity. To do this we tried to make sure that both of our posters has the same layout and a very similar color scheme as to let the audience know that they are linked by the same film. Also we used the same images in the magazine article that we used in the posters.

These pictures show how we used mise-en-scene in the film and for the posters. The picture above was used for my poster, we choose to place the camera in a cupboard because we felt that it was an image which would pull you in seen as you normally wouldn't find a camera in this place and is therefore wrong.

 

This picture was designed to be a screen shot from the film that Jake used on his poster. In order to create the most effective shot we decided to close the curtains to make it look like something is wrong due to the fact that you can tell that the sun is out which also made the orange effect on the picture which we thought made the image look creepy.

Final Magazine Article Changes

We realized that there were problems with the layout of our poster and that we did not think that it looked professional enough. There fore we decided to change the layout and house style of the magazine, still using the same text content. This is the article as it currently looks:

We have also completed work on our final posters. We loosely worked together to create the posters so that the posters would have a similar house style but worked separately so we would each have our own mark on the posters we are submitting.

This is the poster that i will be submitting into the examiners. I choose this picture because i felt that it shows the technology element of the film but is also not a direct shot from the film which allows people who have seen the film to be able to look at the poster and realize this is what the character of Peterson would have seen in his final moments. Final Corrections/Changes to Film

In the final few days of working on the film we made a few corrections and changes to the film. The main one of these changes was to change the title of the film from Pull Over, which we realized did not fit in with the story changes we had made due to restrictions during filming which meant that we could not use a car. The other part of the film we changed was the end credits sequence in which we added some hand held camera footage of one of the victims of the murders running through the woods and shows how they did end up at the house which we felt needed to be explained.

Shooting Review

Over past few weeks we have completed filming on our short film and are currently putting it through the final stages of editing the film. Several changes have been made from the original script, mainly the character of Sarah has been changed to a male character called Jonathan due to the fact that the actress we had asked to play the role of Sarah had to pull out due to college commitments. Thus we started a search for someone who would be available for filming whenever we needed to film and ended up just changing the gender of the character.

Also we realised that we may not have enough story content to fill the 5 minute time slot we were aiming for so we wrote some extra scenes into the script so that we would be able to give the story and characters more depth. Here are extracts for some of the scenes that we added or extended.

The 1st of these scenes was a scene between detective Peterson and Jonathan:

Peterson: So do you want to tell us what happened?
Jonathan: Well we went down to the woods, and ....

The 2nd scene we extended was the phone call between Peterson and Scott:

Scott: Sir We've got a big problem here
Paterson: Scott, What have you found?

The final and major alteration was to the final scene which we changed quite drastically to include direct interaction between Scott and Jonathan which allows Jonathan himself to explain his motives:

Jonathan: Why? Because i spent my entire life been bullied by pricks like them and i snapped

As expected the film does not completely stick to the script as we allowed a bit of room for improvisation by the actors but in whole we kept to the script as close as possible.

Film Magazine Spread

For our coursework we were asked to create a double paged spread that would include our film in some way. So while we were waiting to get a time when we had our cast in place we decided we would design our double page spread and fill it in as well as we could without our actual film been made:

The idea we came up with was to present the film in a list of films that we had enjoyed over the last 12 months that most people would probably have missed. We choose these films by looking at the list of highest grossing films of 2010 (http://boxofficemojo.com/yearly/chart/?view2=worldwide&yr=2010&p=.htm) and looked for films we had watched that we felt should have performed better at the box office. We decided to do 2 film reviews each, to make it fair and even. I choose to review 2 films adapted from comic books and graphic novels, Kick-Ass and Scott Pilgrim Vs The World, Whereas Jake choose to review remakes of classic horror films, The Crazies and A Nightmare On Elm Street.

Film Preproduction: 1st Draft of Script

Here is our 1st Draft for our script for our film. There will probably be some changes in the final film because we may improvise some scenes on the day as well as adding or cutting scenes from the film to get the film to fit into the allocated time slot.

The film opens on a black screen and we here the noise of someone knocking on a door. The next shot is from inside the house looking down a hallway towards the door that suddenly just swings forwards revealing two men wearing long coats with shirt and tie underneath.

Detective Peterson: Hello, is anybody here?

Detective Scott: This is the police

Their calls are answered with silence and the police officers start to advance into the hallway. There are no lights on in the house and all the curtains are drawn. All the light will be natural light. Then there is a sudden noise in the kitchen.

DS: Who’s there, show your self

There is no response to this. They open the kitchen door and turn on the light. At the table Luke is sat at the table apparently asleep with his head laid on the table, the door out of the kitchen is ajar. Scott moves towards Luke and attempts to wake him up and Peterson goes to look at the door. After several seconds of vicious shaking Luke falls of the chair to the floor. Scott begins to back away towards the door they came through and steps on someone’s foot both he and the girl scream.

DP: What the hells going on in there

Peterson reappears at the door and sees a girl whose face is dirty and clothes are tattered. She is cowering in the corner of the room holding her foot that Woods has just stood on.

DP: Are you the person who rang for help? About your friends?

Sarah nods slowly looking at the policemen

DS: Would you like to tell us what happened?

This time Sarah starts laughing hysterically turning into crying she explains what has happened to the officers.

Sarah: The woods… the woods… there’s someone in the woods… and my friends… please you have to help them … please THE WOODS

DP: Scott it looks like we’ve got a problem, I’ll stay with the girl you go find the others

Sarah interrupts in a new fit of hysterical crying

S: Their dead, they’re all dead

DP: Be Careful Scott, Take no risks

DS: Yes Sir, I’ll be in touch

Scott leaves the house in a rush and it then the camera cuts to a shot of Scott running through the woods. He suddenly stops and looks in terror straight at the camera and picks up his phone. Cuts back to Peterson in the house who is now alone in the kitchen

DP: Scott, Any news

DS: Yes sir, She’s right I’ve found one and it doesn’t look like their death was an accident either

DP: Get back here; I’ll call for back up

DS: Ok, Have you managed to get anything out of the girl?

DP: Not yet, she just said she wanted to clean herself up

DS: Well keep your eye on her, for now she’s the only lead we’ve got

DP: Understood

Peterson begins to move out of the kitchen too look up the stairs but see’s that the cupboard door is slightly ajar, he moves towards it and opens the cupboard reveals a camera and begins to watch. It cuts to Scott finding the final body. His phone rings and he picks it up

DP: Scott we got a mess….

The phone line goes dead

DS: Peterson? Are you there?

Scott begins to run to back towards the house. It suddenly cuts to Scott coming cautiously through the door.

DS: Peterson? Are you Ok? What’s going on?!

Scott edges down the hall towards the kitchen and as he enters see’s the camera layer on the kitchen table. He picks up the camera and begins to watch at the end of the camera’s tape the camera drops. Sarah then picks up the camera and she turns it off. Over dramatic music then starts

Film Poster Ideas

We have been exploring several different ideas and techniques we can use to create our film poster by using software photo shop.


Our first idea was to change the whole poster into black and white to give it a mysterious look that draws on early film noir films:

However we then had the idea to use a technique similar to that used in Sin City where the main bulk of the poster would be in black and white but the subject would be in color, unfortunately we don't have our actors to try and create this poster so we used a photo we already had for our practice

We also experimented with ideas for the for layout of the posters on paper which we will scan and upload the ideas onto our blog soon. We also had a try at using photo shop:
